Mumbai, Apr 8: A brief session of physical activity — even just a few minutes of brisk walking or cycling — can significantly enhance memory by triggering bursts of brain activity known as “ripples,” according to new research.

Scientists found that aerobic exercise, such as cardio workouts, stimulates the hippocampus, a key region responsible for memory formation and retrieval. These short bursts of activity generate synchronized electrical signals between neurons, helping the brain consolidate and store information more effectively.

The study, led by neuroscientist Michelle Voss from the University of Iowa, observed participants immediately after exercise and detected increased “brain ripples” — rapid patterns of neural activity associated with memory processing.

Researchers discovered that these ripples became more frequent and better synchronised across different parts of the brain following exercise, suggesting a biological mechanism behind improved memory retention.

Interestingly, earlier findings also indicate that timing matters — exercising a few hours after learning new information may enhance recall more effectively than working out immediately. In contrast, stretching exercises did not show the same memory benefits.

The study also highlighted the role of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), a protein that helps form new neural connections. Higher fitness levels enable the body to produce more BDNF, amplifying the brain benefits of each workout.

Experts say even a single exercise session can improve focus for up to two hours and boost mood by increasing dopamine levels. Regular physical activity may also help protect against cognitive decline as people age.

The findings reinforce the importance of staying active, suggesting that even short bursts of exercise can deliver meaningful benefits for brain health and memory.
