Self-Care Became A Billion-Dollar Industry. Women Are Still Exhausted

At 10:30 p.m., long after the workday technically ends, many professional women begin a second routine. No, not answering emails, or doing chores, or putting their children to sleep. They begin their maintenance routine. Modern professional women are one of the most optimized populations in history. They track sleep, hydration, stress, steps, nutrition, productivity, hormones, and mood. They attend therapy, practice mindfulness, invest in skincare, and outsource inconvenience wherever possible. Yet they’re still tired. Not occasionally tired, but structurally tired. The kind of tired that returns after rest, reappears Monday morning, and quietly persists even after a vacation. When a problem survives this much optimization, it stops being personal and becomes systemic and structural.

Some argue that the wellness economy isn’t fixing burnout; it’s managing its consequences. At some point in the last decade, exhaustion became a beauty problem. Dark circles were reframed as skincare issues, stress became inflammation, and being overworked became “aging.” But oddly, the solution for many women has not been rest. Instead, it’s been a serum, a supplement, a meditation app, or red-light therapy; and sometimes, all of the above.

The hope is that a cosmetic treatment can guarantee that women finally look, and therefore feel, less tired. Individually, these products make sense, and many are useful and even work. Some are evidence-based, and there’s empirical and anecdotal data to support their use. But collectively, they reveal something uncomfortable.

Modern professional women are being taught to treat structural strain as a personal maintenance routine, and some say the market built around that idea is enormous and still growing. Yet while spending on wellness, skincare, and aesthetic services continues to grow, reported stress and burnout have not meaningfully declined. That contradiction isn’t a failure on the part of women to care for themselves properly. It suggests we misidentified the problem.

Burnout Was Never Just About Coping

For years, the cultural message has been consistent: if you feel depleted, you just need better self-regulation. But large-scale research studies of workplace wellness programs have repeatedly found limited impact on health outcomes or costs. A 2019 study published in JAMA found that employees who participated in their company’s wellness program reported some improvement in managing their weight, but did not experience significant improvements in other areas of health and health-related behavior, such as cholesterol and smoking. Similarly, the study also did not find any significant decreases in medical expenses.

Interventions aimed at mindfulness and lifestyle coaching rarely change the underlying drivers of distress and stress. This has led critics of the self-care industry to warn women that many interventions improve tolerance, but not conditions. Bigger than that, women aren’t recovering; they’re stabilizing themselves enough to keep functioning, and sometimes even functioning can seem tricky.

The Workday That Doesn’t End at Work

The second critical piece of the puzzle is invisible labor. Women tend to perform significantly more unpaid domestic and caregiving labor than men. When paid and unpaid work are combined, their total workload is higher. But time alone doesn’t explain the exhaustion many women experience.

Researchers increasingly point to mental load and the cognitive responsibility of anticipating needs, tracking logistics, and preventing problems. Unlike tasks, it never completes; it simply resets and rolls over into the next day. The issue isn’t just hours worked; it’s continuous responsibility without full psychological disengagement. This means the nervous system rarely has an opportunity to fully recover by returning to baseline. According to some psychologists, recovery is detrimental because full recovery of the nervous system restores energy, not simply learning how to cope with stress.

The Rise of the Relief Economy

When a problem is systemic but experienced privately, the market fills the gap. The modern wellness and beauty industries don’t just sell appearance; they sell relief that women feel they can control. Because most working women cannot immediately change workload expectations, household responsibilities, or digital availability, treatments seem like the optimal cure, because they’re something most women can access and control.

That distinction matters psychologically. A 2025 National Institutes of Health study found that the sense of control over our environment and circumstances reduces anxiety, even when the underlying condition persists. So, fatigue becomes aesthetic, and aesthetic problems feel solvable.

Why Appearance Became the Outlet

Consistent research shows that visual social platforms increase body dissatisfaction while increasing interest in cosmetic procedures. Image-based comparison normalizes intervention as maintenance rather than alteration. For professional women, this intersects with performance culture. Video meetings, headshots, and personal branding are important to many working women, and looking tired increasingly reads as underperforming.

So, the body becomes a dashboard for systemic strain. Experiencing exhaustion? Use an under-eye treatment. Feeling stressed? Take this supplement. Experiencing cognitive overload? Download this productivity app. Feeling chronic fatigue? Use injectables to make yourself look more rested. Each intervention addresses a symptom caused by the environment.

The Loop That Keeps Expanding

This behavior creates a predictable cycle:

  1. Continuous demands reduce recovery.
  2. Reduced recovery produces visible strain.
  3. Visible strain produces appearance anxiety.
  4. Consumer solutions provide temporary control.

Because the original pressures remain, the relief must be repeated. Although some may argue, this leads to irrational spending. For many women, it’s a rational adaptation to unsustainable conditions.

Why The Products Aren’t The Problem

Within limits, most wellness interventions work. For instance, moisturizers hydrate skin, botox softens lines, meditation reduces acute stress, and vibrating plates can help with lymphatic drainage. But they operate at the level of symptoms, while the exhaustion originates at the level of structure: constant availability, fragmented attention, emotional regulation, and cognitive responsibility across various areas of life. So, improvement feels fleeting and temporary. Not because women are doing self-care wrong, but because maintenance cannot substitute for restoration.

Self-care culture expanded and answered the call during a period when work became boundaryless, emotional labor increased, digital presence intensified, and rest decreased for many women. The shift was subtle, transitioning from resting the body to managing the body, while optimization replaced recovery. Self-care is often framed as empowerment, and it most certainly can be. Agency matters, but empowerment changes meaning when relief must be continuously purchased to sustain normal functioning. At that point, the market is no longer supporting well-being. It’s a stabilizing strain. The wellness economy did not create women’s exhaustion. It organized itself around it.
